Shelf Life of a Radish:
Radish is available in markets with or without leaves, and their taste is best on the day when they are purchased. However, you can keep the radish in the refrigerator for about a week, but make sure to remove the leaves from it. If you want to store it in the refrigerator with the leaves, then its shelf life will only be about three days. The best way to keep the radish, fresh while storing it, is to keep the radish in the bag with perforations. Radishes usually have a long half-life which is majorly due to the fact that it has a high content of moisture. It is not a suitable food item for freezing.
Purchasing a Radish:
Most radishes are available throughout the year. The skin of a radish has different colors, but the red color is the most commonly known and the best color. The other varieties are a red-white color and a white color. It probably originated in Asia and has a slightly sharp bitter taste. If you want to purchase radishes, then look at its outer appearance first. It should look smooth and have a bright color. There should be fresh green leaves on the top of the radish. Do not buy the loose and soft radishes that are dull in color. If there are any brown or white scars present on the radish or any black spots, then do not purchase. Avoid purchasing the radish if they have yellow tops or have a slimy texture. It is the sign of improper storage or that they are old.
Storing Radishes:
Storing radish is not that difficult as one may think. You can simply store the fresh radish by chopping off the green portion. Ensure to keep the radish roots unwashed, and store it in the fridge. Radishes can be stored for a week or two by being sealed in a plastic bag. Radishes can also be stored by removing the roots and the top. After this, place these radishes in the zipper bag and refrigerate. Place a towel between each layer of radish pieces. They will allow them to remain crispy and fresh for a longer period of time.
How to Handle Radishes:
Wash the radish with water to remove the dust from the outside. Remove the roots and leaves of the radish. Wash it again and pat to dry. Radish can be served in sliced or diced form; it can also be grated and minced if the recipe calls for that. They are usually cooked so that their bitter flavor can be lessened. The edible part of this vegetable is the bulb.
Cooking Radishes:
You can eat radishes raw, or you may also use it as an ingredient in making other dishes. You can enjoy eating it even sometimes without peeling the outer layer. Make sure to wash it before eating and trim the base and top portion of the bulb. Radishes are frequently used in making salads. It is a delicious part of a salad and also helps to improve digestion. You can also use it in stir-fried dishes or in soups.
